As architects with a strong interest in art, we often find ourselves exploring how sculptural elements can become part of the architectural experience. For The Colour Burst House, where much of the furniture was developed through rich collaborations with designers we admire, we felt the space needed a vertical counterpoint. Something that could stand in quiet dialogue with the bold, expressive objects around it.
We designed two metal sculptures: one painted in bright orange, echoing the project’s vivid palette, and the other in black, offering a more grounded presence. The pieces draw inspiration from Alexander Calder’s sculptural explorations, especially his ability to balance form, rhythm and spatial presence with a kind of playfulness. While not kinetic, they are meant to feel alive, to shift subtly in appearance as you move around them.
They stand as quiet but confident interruptions in the space. Neither furniture nor pure art, but somewhere in between. Designing and building these sculptures was a natural extension of our passion for working across disciplines and a reminder of how architecture, craft and art can come together in ways that are both unexpected and honest.
Their realisation owes much to the skill and sensitivity of fabricator Raju Antony, whose clarity of understanding and attention to detail helped bring the pieces to life exactly as we envisioned them.
